Abstract: In this talk we discuss a general system of hyperbolic balance laws. We consider the Cauchy problem near an equilibrium state. Under a set of assumptions, which include an entropy function and the Shizuta-Kawashima dissipation condition, we obtain the existence of global solution. Under the same assumptions, in one space dimension we further obtain an asymptotic solution and the pointwise convergence towards it. Then we discuss the removal of the Shizuta-Kawashima condition by the example of gas dynamics in thermal non-equilibrium. We see that the solutions display a very different behavior in both linear and nonlinear systems.
